Instrumental Music & College Production

Instrumental Music

The instrumental Music Program provides an opportunity for every student to learn a musical instrument.  The college is one of a cluster of East Gippsland schools including Barinsdale, Lakes Entrance and Swifts Creek secondary colleges which offer instrumental music programs focussed on jazz / orchestral instruments.

Approximately 75 students participate in this valued program at Orbost Secondary College.  These students often perform locally but also participate in Jazz Festivals, Interstate Tours and Workshops with other schools.  Learning an instrument can lead to VCE studies in music, and from there to degrees, diplomas and ultimately careers in the music profession.  The college is justifiably proud of this program.

But instrumental music offers more than this. By learning an instrument students develop self-discipline, self-confidence and team building skills.  It has also been well documented through research projects that the study of instrumental music assists in learning in academic subject areas.

College Production

Almost every year Orbost Secondary College provides students with the opportunity to participate in either a full scale musical production or a school play.  Students firstly audition, and are then cast in either main roles or chorus groups.  They then spend time rehearsing, with the ultimate goal of performing the finished piece to between 500 – 800 audience members over three nights.

Being involved in the production requires students to attend rehearsal after school one night of the week, and also spend some of their lunchtimes learning songs, dances and running through the acting in scenes.  This valuable experience sees students take responsibility for managing their time and commitment to ensure the show comes together.

Little Shop Of Horrors

In 2011 Orbost Secondary College presented the musical production of Little Shop Of Horrors.  Around 30 students made up the cast with another 15 students in the band.  These students all attended a three day production camp, where the show really came together.

It was a great experience that was lots of fun.  It was an exciting way to get to know other students across all the year levels” – Hayley Mull (Audrey from Little Shop of Horrors – 2011)
