Orbost Secondary College is a caring and progressive college where students are encouraged and supported to achieve their best. We aim to provide a high quality, diverse education and to foster positive skills and attitudes. We value honesty, integrity, fairness and courage. We respect ourselves, our environment and the rights of others. We encourage students to seize opportunities and strive for success.
The College has a diverse range of student programs which continue to develop in response to student needs. We offer a sequential and comprehensive curriculum, which aims to recognise the different needs, abilities and interests of individual students. Many of our programs focus on teamwork, interpersonal and personal learning and community involvement.
The College operates a system of Year Level Sub-School Leaders and Co-ordinators at Senior (Years 10-12) and Middle School (Years 7-9) who are responsible for handling matters which involve their sub-school.
More specifically, the Middle Sub-School Leader and Co-ordinators are responsible for the Grade 6 and 7 transition program and Middle School Camps. The two Sub-School Leaders are responsible for the organisation of the Years 9 and 10 electives program and student records of this program. The Senior Sub-School Leader is responsible for the organisation and conduct of the Senior Program within the College and works alongside the Senior School Co-ordinators and Careers Co-ordinator.
At Years 7 - 10, students study a core curriculum with some electives from the Arts and Technology learning areas. At a senior level, the school provides a range of pathways for students. Through our offerings, students are able to pursue a Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or the alternative Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) with Vocational and Education Training (VET) subjects available in each course. The College also offers a Satellite Re-engagement Program to re-engage students who had previously left or were at risk of not completing their education. This off-campus program operates from the Orbost SES building.
Work experience, part-time studies and options for Year 10 students to study VCE and VET subjects, have all been aimed at engaging students to maximise their opportunities. Student progress is monitored through a comprehensive and regular reporting system.
Orbost Secondary College is well recognised for its diverse sports program which offers students the opportunity to compete in house swimming, athletics and cross country competitions; in intra and inter-school competition and to excel in individual or team sporting events. Our students regularly make it to state level in a variety of sporting events.
Music is an important feature of our college program and the community takes great pride in our bands. Our excellent instrumental program provides our students with the opportunity to learn a variety of instruments and all music students are involved in either the Junior, Intermediate or Senior Bands. We also work closely with local primary schools to offer instrumental education to interested students in Grade 5 and 6. These students are always enthusiastic and active participants in our Junior and Intermediate Bands! The Swing Band travels north each year to perform at the annual Merimbula Jazz Festival.
